Oral histories stitched into cloth – a DVD for schools and libraries

Following on from our 3 year programme, the hugely successful Ship of Dreams Exhibition in 2011, Stitches in Time is pleased to present an accompanying oral history project for schools and libraries.
Ship of Dreams is an intergenerational project that captures and shares the common cultural heritage and histories of the east London Docks from the 1930’s to the 1980’s, as told by local residents.
Seven Tower Hamlets residents are interviewed, Bill Crooks talks about his work as a docker between 1955 and 1980 and Maisie describes seeing barges unloading exotic cargoes of sugar and spices.
The dvd uses the interviews and images, of textiles from the exhibition, to bring to life memories of working lives.
12 schools and 3 parents groups participated in researching and making textile sails for the exhibition, you can see images from these sails in the DVD. Older peoples groups also took part, transcribing images of dockworkers and cargoes onto cloth.

Exhibition / DVD notes for teachers can be downloaded from this website and the dvd will be available to schools in January 2012.

The Ship of Dreams Project and dvd were funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“Aspirations” a textile tapestry, for the Landmark London Hotel, in Marylebone Westminster. A partnership project with the Portman Early Childhood Centre, Job Centre Plus, Stitches in Time and the Landmark Hotel.

Ten Parents attending the Portman Early Childhood Centre came together with three staff members at the Landmark Hotel and a member of the Rotary Club of St Marylebone to create a collaborative textile hanging with Stitches in Time.
In a series of sessions over 4 months led by artists Katie Adkins, Anna Cocciadeferro and Fateha Hussein, participants met in an informal setting at the hotel, enabling Landmark staff to learn about the lives of local residents, and for local residents to improve their skills and build networks with the hotel.
Each participant embroidered a piece of the hanging, symbolising their aspirations for themselves, their family and the future employment.
The tapestry was displayed at an event on December 5th ,“Aspirations” was funded by the Landmark Hotel.

Jagonari Centre – Our Own Stories

posted 16 Sep 2011 04:32 by SIT WEB   [ updated 16 Sep 2011 04:50 ]

In April 2011, Stitches in Time were commissioned by the Jagonari Centre to facilitate a 14 session creative course with 35/40 participants as part of The Women Empowered Project,
The primary aim of the Women Empowered Project (WEP) was to support the positive resettlement of third-country women nationals living in East London who have been in the UK less than 5 years in line with the EU framework of Common Basic Principles for Integration. Stitches in Time worked on the creative strand of the programme, aimed to encourage individual self-expression alongside group collaboration, which resulted in a final textile hanging.

The WEP wanted to celebrate all the participants had learnt through the programme’s other strands, with a unique creative course, based on the idea that expression of Art has been historically a female occupation in some cultures, especially those beneficiaries that this project is targeting, including Bangladeshi and Somalian women. This expression is a common form of communication in all cultures, and provided an opportunity for the beneficiaries of this project to communicate their experience of immigration and living in the UK through a familiar art.

The final piece, titled ‘Our own Stories’, was decided through group discussion to be inspired by the Jagonari Centre’s mosaic doorway, and the mosaic tiles made through fabric painting, embroidery, silk painting, appliqué and stencilling images of the landscape and nature from the participants’ countries of origin. The lead artist for the project was Katie Adkins and  assisted by Fatheha Hussian.

6th to 17th of June 2011

Please join us on the 8th June Opening Event 6.30-8pm

St. Paul's Bow Common community venue

The Ship of Dreams programme is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This cross-generational project explores local heritage through the memories of the working docks from early 1900s to the present day. These memories are interpreted into textile 'sails' inspired by Thames Barges, and recorded to create an audio DVD.

After a successful exhibition in 2010 with 30 workshops and more than 400 people involved, we are celebrating the last year of the project with a two-week exhibition in June 2011. The artworks from the three year project will be on display,  the sails feature embroidery, printing, painting and photography. There will be workshops for all ages and an opportunity to listen to our educational DVD about the history of the river.
